Ebrahim Raisi is the current president of Iran. He assumed office on August 5, 2021, succeeding Hassan Rouhani. Prior to becoming president, Raisi served as Chief Justice of Iran, Attorney General of Iran, and Deputy Judiciary Chief.
Born on December 14, 1960, in Mashhad, Iran, Raisi is a religious cleric and holds degrees in Islamic law and jurisprudence from the Imam Sadiq University in Tehran. He is known for his conservative Islamist views and has been associated with the conservative establishment in Iran.
Raisi has also been accused of involvement in human rights violations, specifically the 1988 execution of thousands of political prisoners. His appointment as Chief Justice in 2019 was met with protests and condemnation from human rights organizations.
As president, Raisi has promised to focus on improving the economy, reducing poverty, and combating corruption. He has also expressed a desire to boost Iran's regional influence and strengthen ties with other countries in the region.
